The emergence of nicotine-free E-Liquids, known as shortfills, was a response to the regulatory changes brought about by the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD). These innovative bottles hold slightly less liquid than their size suggests – think a 60ml shortfill bottle containing 50ml of liquid or a 120ml bottle with 100ml.

The TPD mandated that all nicotine products undergo approval and testing by the MHRA, leading to the reduction of E-Liquid bottles to 10ml. Simultaneously, tanks shrunk, and some flavours vanished due to the prohibitive costs of analysis and submissions outweighing production expenses.

To sidestep these new regulations, nicotine-free E-Liquids, or shortfills, emerged. While still legal, they spared users the paperwork associated with nicotine-containing products. Shortfills gained popularity by offering the potential for more intricate flavours and the flexibility to manage nicotine intake. Users could add nicotine shots to their shortfills, accounting for the slightly reduced liquid volume in the bottles.

Advantages of Using Nicotine Shots and Shortfills:

  • Tailor-Made Blends: Customise your E-Liquid blend to suit your preferences.
  • Coil Longevity: Reduce the risk of burning your coils compared to thicker nic salts.
  • Compatibility: Shortfills and nicotine shots are compatible with most devices.
  • Maximised Flavour: Nic shots are typically unflavoured, ensuring the full flavour of your shortfill shines through.

Disadvantages

  • Limited Strengths: Nicotine shots may not offer high nicotine strengths compared to nicotine salts.

How to Mix Shortfills

  • Ensure you are adding your nicotine shot to a 0mg/ml, nicotine-free E-Liquid.
  • Remove caps and nibs from both the shortfill and nicotine shot.
  • Squeeze the nicotine shot slowly into the shortfill, taking care to avoid spills.
  • Replace the nib and secure a tight seal, then shake thoroughly for a few minutes to ensure proper mixing.

When mixing, consider the E-Liquid volume and the VG/PG ratio. Different ranges can result in vastly different E-Liquids. For instance, a 50ml shortfill is typically paired with 10ml nicotine shots to create a 60ml liquid with 3mg of nicotine. Adjust the nicotine shot according to your preferred throat hit and cloud production, considering the VG/PG ratio of your shortfill. Whether you opt for a higher VG ratio for larger clouds or a 50/50 ratio for a balanced experience, shortfills and nicotine shots offer a versatile canvas for vapers to craft their perfect vaping experience.
