To make sure you really know your stuff, we've answered some of the most commonly asked questions about vaping.
As the NHS points out, e-cigarettes are strictly regulated for quality and safety in the UK and they "carry a small fraction of the risk of cigarettes". This is because they don't produce carbon monoxide and they don't contain tobacco, two of the most dangerous constituents of cigarette smoke. A range of leading health bodies and organisations, including the British Medical Association, Royal College of General Practitioners and Cancer Research UK, agree that vaping is much less harmful than smoking. Based on the evidence currently available, Public Health England estimates that e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than regular cigarettes.
If you're just starting off, we advise trying 3mg of nicotine. You can then increase the strength if you wish to. Note that nicotine salts contain stronger nicotine doses than traditional vape juices (11mg and 20mg). They're also absorbed into the body more quickly. This makes them a popular choice for people who've recently quit smoking and switched to e-cigarettes.
Shortfills on the other hand contain no nicotine at all, meaning you can buy them in much bigger bottles. You then have the option of adding your own nicotine shots (sold in 10ml bottles). This tends to be the cheapest way to vape.
No, e-cigarettes have not been shown to cause popcorn lung. Cancer Research UK highlights that there have been no cases of this medical condition reported in people who use e-cigarettes.
Popcorn lung refers to a type of lung disease caused by a build-up of scar tissue in the lungs. This tissue blocks the flow of air, resulting in breathing difficulties. The condition got its name because a group of factory workers developed it after being exposed to a chemical called diacetyl, which was used as a popcorn flavouring. In the past, some e-liquids contained diacetyl, which led people to wonder if there might be a risk of vapers developing popcorn lung. However, diacetyl was banned in e-liquids in the UK in 2016, so vape juices sold in the UK shouldn't contain this chemical.
It is widely accepted that vaping is less harmful than smoking. E-liquids don't contain tobacco and they don't create the harmful gas carbon monoxide, two of the dangers associated with cigarette smoke.
The NHS notes that you will not achieve the total health benefits of switching to e-cigarettes unless you give up regular cigarettes entirely.
Across the UK, many thousands of people have given up smoking with the help of e-cigarettes and, globally, this figure stands at more than 41 million. The flexible nicotine doses provided by vaping allow you to satisfy cravings without exposing yourself to the harmful chemicals found in cigarettes. The findings of a major UK clinical trial published in 2019 showed that when used in conjunction with face-to-face support, people who vaped as a way of helping them give up cigarettes were twice as likely to succeed as those who relied on other nicotine replacement aids, like gum or patches.
To have the best chance of success, make sure you vape as much as you need to and use an e-liquid with the right strength of nicotine.
